Vitamins for Healthy Skin

May 8th, 2009 by allhairstyleshaircuts in Health · No Comments

A healthy skin is a reflection of inner health and natural beauty. Skin is the outer covering of the body that protects everything inside the body. It is made up of multiple layers of epithelial tissues and covered with pores, sebaceous glands and sweat glands. Skin regulates the temperature of the body and eliminates toxins from the body through perspiration. It is a vital organ that requires good care. Right vitamins and minerals are essential for keeping the skin clear and healthy. They act on the surface of the skin, providing a healthy and glowing skin.

Healthy skin is a first responder. It helps keep intruders – from UV rays to bacteria – from hacking into the system. And it’s amazingly up to the task. The largest organ in the body, skin protects our insides, regulates heat and cold, manufactures hormones, is self-repairing, creates new cells and eliminates dead cells, hosts many of the body’s other components (like hair and sweat glands) – and through it all, stays firm, supple, and strong.

Your skin, weighing in as largest organ on your body, is made up of three layers of epithelial tissue. These tissue layers are made of cells that protect the body against pathogens, secrete fluids and absorb environmental affects. It insulates the body and regulates against temperature. The skin measures 2.5-2.0 meters square, most of which is 2-3mm thick, weighing an approximate 15% of individual body weight. Your skin contains sweat glands, blood vessels, melanocytes and over 1,000 nerve endings.

One could argue that the original, and certainly now the most-studied, anti-aging topical skin care cream is Vitamin A, specifically the retinoid family of Vitamin A derivatives. The pharmaceutical compound of Retin-A has been around for two decades and its effectiveness at decreasing wrinkles is well established. Its mechanism of action has been shown to be the result of increasing collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin while increasing exfoliation of the outer epithelial layer. This combined effect results in smoother skin.

Vitamin C is an essential acid that is normally deposited in the skin and is a vital antioxidant that helps protect the skin from free radicals and harmful ultraviolet light. Vitamin C helps in the formation of normal collagen that is essential in tethering scars and filling them up until they become less visible or noticeable. Citrus fruits and juices, green peppers, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli and other leafy greens are rich sources of Vitamin C.

The vitamin D , made speak about it each summer, it is this famous vitamin which the body can synthesize only under the effect of the rays of the sun. The vitamin D thus created on the level of the skin will play an important part on the level of the liver and muscles. In summer, the body stock this vitamin which it will use throughout the winter. The vitamin D is also present in certain food such as fatty fish, eggs, butter, mushrooms and the meat, but in relatively small quantity.

Vitamin E is believed to support the heart, skin, hair, muscles, nerves and joints. It is a natural anti-oxidant. This vitamin was discovered when laboratory rats were not given a balanced diet. They were only fed one kind of food at a time. It was found that they could stay alive but could not breed. The missing factor was Vitamin E. It was named after “E” for Eros because a lack of this vitamin caused a lack of the ability to breed. This doesn’t mean Vitamin E is an aphrodisiac of any kind. It simply shows that a lack of this important vitamin can cause health problems.

Health Benefits of Cabbage

May 8th, 2009 by allhairstyleshaircuts in Health · No Comments

Cabbage grows to its full harvestable size with in three months. It has been known that the cabbage yield is greater than that of any other vegetable. That is the reason why it is such a preferred product. Other related cruciferous cabbage cousins include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kohlrabi, cauliflower, and kale.

While the health benefits of cabbage and other fruits and vegetables are numerous, it is important to eat a variety of foods every day. The healthy heart cabbage diet or the “cabbage soup diet” is one of the fad diets that the American Heart Association and other public health organizations warn against. There are many reasons for these warnings, depending on which diet one is attempting to follow. The healthy heart cabbage diet has many flaws.

Cabbage is a sturdy, strong and abundant vegetable. Hardy and easy to grow, it is almost universally available in all countries and cultures. Cabbage belongs to the all important family of cruciferous vegetables. The members of this family of vegetables are so named for their cross shaped (crucifer) flower petals. Rich in nutrition and fiber, cabbage is an absolutely phenomenal source of Vitamin C. Even more impressive is that cabbage is famous for a specialized, naturally occurring, nitrogenous compound known as indoles. Current research indicates that indoles can lower the risk of various forms of cancer.

Cabbage can also help clean your intestines. Fresh cabbage juice can relieve abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, bronchitis, and asthma. Studies have shown that cabbage also prevents the formation or development of cancer cells. Its iron and sulphur contents are factors making it effective in cleaning our digestive system. The cabbage has also shown in aiding the production of more antibodies protecting us from different illnesses.

The vegetable is also a very good source of carbohydrates, sugar, soluble and insoluble fiber, sodium, manganese, folate, vitamin B6, potassium, and omega-3 fatty acids. Furthermore, it is also a good source of thiamin (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), calcium, potassium, magnesium, vitamin A, and protein. Cabbage also contains phytochemicals called indoles and sulforaphane, the breakdown products of compounds called glucosinolates.

The fastest way to enjoy the benefits of cabbage is by drinking 25-50ml of fresh, raw cabbage juice each day. It’s also a well known aid for peptic ulcers. Four glasses a day will accelerate the healing process and relieve the pain. It does wonders for your insides. The best cabbage for this purpose is called the Coallis Lombarda. The reason it is so good, is because it contains high doses of Vitamin U. This powerful vitamin is one of nature’s strongest weapons against gastric and intestinal disorders. In a report from Stanford Medical School, 62 out of 65 cases that were treated for gastric ulcer, were cured after just three weeks.

While cabbage is an extremely healthy vegetable to eat and has many health benefits, it is not a magic potion that will give you weight loss. This can only be achieved by following a healthy eating plan where you consume around 1,200 – 1,500 calories a day depending on your gender, size, occupation etc, as well as incorporating more exercise in to your daily life.

How to Prevent Childhood Obesity

May 5th, 2009 by allhairstyleshaircuts in Health · No Comments

Childhood obesity is one of the most common conditions affecting the children of this century. Millions of children in the US are obese. Obese children are greatly prone to impairment and negative health conditions as a direct result of their excess weight. Nowadays, there are instances of type2 diabetes, heart diseases and sleeping disorders in young children.

So many children are dealing with obesity related issues today and the same children are at severely high risk for developing serious and potentially fatal health related problems because of obesity. There are things that adults can do to help minimize childhood obesity related issues which are simple and effective. Let’s take a look at some positive methods for the prevention of childhood obesity below.

Regular exercise is another important factor in reversing the numbers in the current child obesity graphs. Limit sweetened beverages, including those containing fruit juice, as they make your child feel too full to eat healthier foods. Limit white carbohydrates to reduce obesity in your children including rice, pasta, bleached bread and sugar (desserts).

Have healthy snacks in the house

With childhood obesity rates rising and more overweight toddlers we need to be concerned about our children’s healthy eating patterns. Today children eat more snacks than they used to. Life is lived at faster pace and we want to fill a hunger space quickly. If you introduce more healthy snacks into your home that’s what children will have access to. Leave the snack with high sugar and fat content on the shelf in the store.

Offer healthier food options: Kids will eat what you put on their plate and snack on whatever they can find in the kitchen cabinet. You can help your child by educating yourself about healthy foods and incorporate it into your daily menu and grocery shopping choices. Learn how to cook meals that are low in calories and fat, and high in nutrition. Instead of Oreo’s, ice cream and colas, add low-fat yogurt, 100% juices, and fresh fruit and vegetables to your grocery list.

Most of the factors that contribute to childhood obesity are avoidable and preventable factors. Some of the reasons for childhood obesity, according to the American Obesity Association, are lack of physical activity, poor eating habits, when children are exposed to others who promote sedentary behaviors, and socioeconomic stresses. There is one factor that cannot be helped and that is genetics. When a child has genetics from an obese background their chances of becoming obese greatly increase.

Healthy Snacks — One of the best things you do for your children is to provide them with healthy snacks. I don’t mean health food bars; I mean fresh fruit and vegetables. I know the vegetables are a stretch for some kids, but if your child is young around 1-3 years old, this is the perfect time to start offering raw vegetables as a snack or at dinner. Young children are just developing their eating preferences and are willing to try new foods, especially if they see their caregiver also eating the same food. If your child is older, it isn’t too late.

Chilshood Asthma Symptoms

May 5th, 2009 by allhairstyleshaircuts in Health · No Comments

Asthma is a chest illness that causes difficulty in breathing. A person gets an asthma attack when the lungs do not get sufficient air. Things that trigger asthma attack at home are dust mites, passive smoking, mold, cockroaches, an unclean carpet, stuffed toys and the fur of cats and dogs. Other reasons could be air pollution, certain food and respiratory tract infections and vigorous exercise. The inability to breathe effortlessly and provide oxygen to the lungs makes it a fatal disease.

Asthma is an obstructive respiratory condition characterized by recurrent attacks of shortness of breath, wheezing, rapid breathing and an irritated cough. Between the ages of 3 and 8 years asthma can be found in children. Wheezing, a whistle type sound, is caused when the air flows into the lungs during an asthma attack. When the child exhales normally, mild wheezing happens, and when he exhales deeply, more severe wheezing sounds are heard. In case of extreme asthma, wheezing may be absent as no air is passing through airways.

The signs and symptoms of child asthma are mostly the same as for adults: wheezing, coughing shortness of breath, chest tightness, rapid breathing and exercise intolerance. In addition, asthma kids may have itchy, watery eyes; stuffy, runny nose; sore throat; dark circles under the eyes; flared nostrils; labored breathing; and hunched posture. Recent colds, flu, bronchitis or pneumonia may indicate asthma. Infants with asthma may refuse to suck, and may cough continuously, wheeze or generally act fussy.

Asthma is a very frequent occurrence among children. One in ten infants suffers with the disease. Usually the children outgrow the disease as they grow up but for that to happen smaller children should be treated properly and the diagnoses needs to be done effectively. Usually childhood asthma is very different from adult asthma. During childhood the symptoms are mainly of cough and wheezing. In some severe attacks the accompanying symptoms may also be of fever and breathlessness. The symptoms may usually not be in the form of a paroxysmal attack.

Asthma triggers are very difficult to zero down to, in adults. As the age advances pin pointing them keeps getting more and more difficult. These triggers are also mostly associated with respiratory tract infections and air pollutants. As the age advances considerably there is a lot of confusing signals given out by the patients that may make the diagnoses difficult further still. Asthma symptoms may also be manifesting in the form of tightness in the chest, shortness of breath or cough.

Eat the good fats and avoid the bad ones. Omega-3 oil, found in certain kinds of fish (sardines, salmon, tuna) is a potent anti-inflammatory. A study by Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School and reported in Nature Immunology found that adults who ate fish with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids reduced asthmatic symptoms. These fatty acids are found in cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel and anchovies. Adults who never ate fish as children, were more apt to develop asthma and at an earlier age. An Indiana University study shows that high doses of fish oil of at least 5 g daily helped prevent exercise-induced asthma symptoms.

Ways to Prevent Wrinkles

May 1st, 2009 by allhairstyleshaircuts in Health · No Comments

Natural wrinkle cure products are very, very safe to use. The same cannot be said about artificial wrinkle care products as they contain tons of dangerous chemicals. They have ingredients like alcohol, artificial fragrance, phenol carbolic acid, toluene, and other such chemicals which can lead to a number of severe health problems from allergic reactions to paralysis and even cancer. Natural wrinkle care products, on the other hand, use only organic ingredients which are perfectly safe for people with any skin type.

There are several easy ways to make home remedy for wrinkles. Like applying egg whites under your eyes and face to remove wrinkles can help to rejuvenate the skin. Similarly castor oil also has the same functionality as an egg white. You can also make face packs by using yogurt, vitamin E capsules and egg whites. Apply a mixture of all these ingredients and wash it off after 15 minutes. They have a great effect on your skin which you can notice instantly, but again, it’s only temporary. Prolonged usage of homemade wrinkle smoother will also help to remove the wrinkles.

Don’t stop smiling. Yes, it is true that as your skin looses its elasticity over time, repeated facial expressions will leave permanent wrinkles and creases. But that doesn’t mean that you should stop smiling to keep your skin smooth and wrinkle-free. Smiling and laughing often improves your outlook and helps melt away stress that can wreak havoc on your skin. So keep your chin up and realize that you can’t erase every wrinkle. Treating your skin well and choosing a good anti-wrinkle cream can help ease the signs of aging and nourish your skin for a healthy overall appearance.

Smoking

Simply put, smoking irritates the skin. Smoking narrows the blood vessels in the outermost layers of skin thus impairing blood flow to your skin. Not only blood flow, it depletes the skin of oxygen and nutrients such as vitamin A. Smoking lessens elastin and collagen in the skin (meaning your skin looses its softness and tightness). This is just another reason you should know about what causes wrinkles.

Without using a good deep wrinkle cream, it is almost impossible to get rid of those horrible deep wrinkles that make you look old. However, you should be very careful about choosing a wrinkle cream and you should make an informed decision rather than a random pick. Before we get into that, you should know some important details about deep wrinkles and cracks and how you can get rid of them with the right skin care products.

Simply protecting the eyes with UV blocking glasses and sunglasses is the best choice. If you use sunscreens on the area around the eyes, you need to make sure that the ingredients are safe and gentle. Those areas are more easily irritated than other areas of the face and body.

Dark Circles – Causes and Remedies

May 1st, 2009 by allhairstyleshaircuts in Health · No Comments

Dark circles under your eyes might reveal a couple of “dark truths” about your personal health. They usually occur when you’re overtired or developing an illness or an allergy. They can also result from losing a lot of weight. But the discolorations–the result of engorged blood vessels around your eyes–are themselves medically harmless. In fact, sometimes they’re not even an indication of physical problems.

Everyone gets dark circles under the eyes at various points of time in their lives. The dark circles are often temporary and are not harmful. Contrary to popular belief dark circles under the eyes are not caused by FATIGUE! One of the most common causes of dark circles under the eyes is nasal congestion. In nasal congestion the veins that drain from the eyes into the noses get widened and darker!

The first place to show the first signs of aging is the area around eyes. Why? Well, since the skin surrounding your eyes are thinnest there, it is also the most susceptible to the elements. Also, beneath the skin near your eyes are not equipped with fat or oil glands for protection from damage. We blink, rub and squint our eyes everyday. This hastens the aging process of the skin. As we age, the body does not produce enough collagen and elastin needed to maintain the skin’s elasticity.

The dark circles we sometimes see surrounding our eyes are caused by different reasons. The most common cause is actually traced back through genetics — it is hereditary. When we say it is hereditary, it does not simply mean that your parents pass it on to you but actually made up of different factors.. Some people have naturally thin and more transparent skin than others. The blood passing through the blood vessels often create a bluish color that may be seen through the thinnest skin: around the eyes.

Dark Circles:

Before applying concealer gently pat a light eye cream under the eye to moisturize the skin. Use your ring finger to pat on moisturizer and concealer since the skin in this area is extra delicate and the ring finger, which has the least amount of strength, is less likely to pull or tear. To apply concealer use a concealer brush (similar to a lip brush with soft bristles) to get in those hard to reach areas such as the inner corners of eyes and to get concealer exactly were you want it.. Apply the concealer under your eyes up as far as the lash line to the inner corners. Do not apply concealer to you eyelids because your eye shadow will crease. Then, pat to blend with your ring finger.

One method that you may well have heard of is using cool tea bags and cucumber slices, but how does it work? Well, the purpose of the cucumber is to reduce puffiness and refresh the skin, whilst the tannin from the cool tea bags aims to reduce the discoloration and swelling around the eyes. As you can imagine, this method does take a bit of preparation time, plus there are better alternatives such as using eye creams.

Haloxyl improves blood circulation in the tiny vessels in the delicate skin under our eyes, removing waste products including hemoglobin, which give the darkened color to the skin here. Haloxyl reduced these dark circles by more than 60 percent in trials with human volunteers.

Migraine Symptoms, Types and Home Remedies

April 24th, 2009 by allhairstyleshaircuts in Health · No Comments

Migraine Symptoms, Types and Home Remedies

The migraine headache is one of the worst headaches known to mankind. These headaches render the afflicted completely debilitated until the pain and migraine headache symptom or symptoms pass. Even then the person will need time to recover as dealing with severe pain, which is only one migraine headache symptom, is very exhausting.

The pain of a migraine headache is one of the most excruciating pains that can be felt. A migraine headache is different from a tension headache both in its cause and severity – often intensely throbbing and one-sided. Migraines affect approximately 8% of the Canadian population, females three times more frequently than males, and can cause huge losses in time spent away from work and pleasure.

While most people only think about the piercing pain in their head that they experience during a migraine attack, there are quite a few associated symptoms. Some of these symptoms can occur before the headache begins and are used as warning signs by people who suffer from frequent migraines. If you have symptoms before your headache begins, you probably have classic migraines. These warning signs are often called auras. If you don’t have any symptoms before the migraine begins, you are most likely suffering from common migraines.
Unilateral headache

The intense throbbing pain of a migraine headache is unlike the pain associated with a regular headache. The pain is most often associated with one side of the head and will regularly change to the other side with the next migraine. If the pain is always concentrated in the same place each time you should alert your doctor as this may signal a more serious problem.

Nausea or vomiting

Often combined with light sensitivity, nausea or vomiting may occur as a result of over stimulation. You may begin to feel hot and woozy. You may have trouble driving or riding in a car. The nausea may also be brought on by the intense pain of the migraine headache itself.

Migraine Types

Exertion Migraines are over more quickly than most types of migraines. You can develop one of these migraines if you overextend yourself while you are exercising and develop dehydration at the same time, if you lift something heavy, if you have a sneezing fit, or even if you bend over.

Retinal Migraines are migraines that cause you to temporarily lose vision in an eye. You will probably lose vision before the head pain actually begins.

Herbal remedies are also being used effectively for migraine prevention. Butterbur and feverfew seem particularly helpful.

Butterbur is a shrub-like plant that grows in northern Asia, Europe, and parts of North America. Butterbur extracts are used to treat migraines. Several studies indicate that butterbur is good for migraine prevention. In the largest of these studies, 245 migraineurs took either butterbur extract or a placebo. After four months of treatment, butterbur was more effective than the placebo for migraine prevention.

Lavender can be used for headaches, migraines and sore muscle relief. Lavender eases joint stiffness and helps us cope with chronic pain. Interestingly enough, lavender has antiseptic qualities and even repels insects naturally.

Migraine Headache Treatment

April 24th, 2009 by allhairstyleshaircuts in Health · No Comments

“A migraine is like a tornado; it attacks fast without any warning and wreaks havoc.”

Migraines usually start during the teenage years or early in adult life, affecting more women than men with a ratio of three to one. Migraines are caused from constricted (tightening) arteries that supply blood flow to the brain. When the arteries constrict, blood flow to the brain is reduced as well as the brains oxygen supply. The brain reacts by dilating (enlarging) arteries to meet the brain’s need for energy.

The Various Migraine headache treatments

When it comes to migraine or headache treatments, there are two main options for you to choose from. Of course each of those options contains a wide variety of treatments. You can either go naturally or more traditional, in other words natural treatment or pills. This is the first step you will need to take in your research for a good headache treatment.

Migraine is a very common form of headache, seen in nearly 15 % of the population. Women are more likely to suffer from migraine, than men, and usually there is a hereditary component seen among sufferers. Migraine is known as “Ardhavabhedak” in Ayurveda. Ayurvedic treatment of migraine consists of the following procedures: (i) “Swedan” (local fomentation) (ii) “Nasya” (medicated nasal drops) (iii) “Basti” (Medicated enema) (iv) “Shirobasti” (scalp treatment with medicated milk or oil).

Try these herbal remedies for migraine: Certain herbs are not only effective in treating migraine attacks, but are also devoid of the side-effects of pharmacological agents. Some popular remedial herbs for migraine include feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium), butterbur (Petasites hybridus) and ginger (Zingiber officinalis). Feverfew in particlular has shown great promise in reducing migraine frequency and severity. California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) has muscle relaxant and painkilling properties.

Natrum Muriaticum – The migraines / headaches are often worse in the morning and you may wake up with a headache / migraine or with a warning that you will get one. There is often severe pain in the head as if it would burst. This pain may make you cough or make your eyes water. This is one of the most common migraine / headache homeopathic remedies.

Migraine Triggers

One very natural method of migraine prevention is a migraine trigger diary. Make it important by purchasing a small blank book specifically for the purpose. It will cost less than a prescription, and will help you remember to use it. Place the book in a location where you will see it when you are not busy. Then faithfully record your daily meals, activities, weather, etc. When a migraine episode hits, look back and note what you were doing or eating just prior to its onset.

It leads to the development of a small patch of erythema then a vesicle that erodes appears and usually itching and soreness on the skin of the mouth, lips or lip area. The first symptoms usually appear within 1 or 3 weeks after contact.Cold sore is contagious and once you are infected with it, the virus remains with you for a life. The virus stays dormant most of the time in the nerve cells on your body, until some of certain things can cause recurrence outbreak.

Cold sores or fever blisters can be annoying, not to mention unsightly. Such sores are the products of the herpes simplex virus. They will begin as red dots, then start puffing out, all itchy and tingling and cold sore swelling will take place. As the blister gathers moisture and water, it gets larger, and even more embarrassingly conspicuous. Cold sores actually come from any contact of the herpes simplex virus with your mouth, perhaps early in your childhood. The virus picked out a host cell and moved into it. The cell, perhaps a nerve, then suffered to become the puppet of the virus, as the viral DNA gave orders to the host to produce more of the herpes simplex virus.

All about Allergies

April 15th, 2009 by allhairstyleshaircuts in Health · No Comments

Allergic reactions to wheat happen shortly (a few minutes to a number of hours) after exposure or intake of wheat and wheat-related goods. Wheat allergy is most commonly manifested via the skin (such as in angioderma, urticaria and eczema), the respiratory system (via allergic rhinitis or asthma attacks), or the gastrointestinal system (such as in vomiting and nausea, oral allergic reactions and cramps in the abdomen). Other wheat components also help aggravate adverse allergic reactions to other particles.

Many times people make the mistake of confusing an allergy to wheat as the same as an allergy to gluten. While on the service they may seem like they’re the same, it’s important to understand that in fact they’re very different. The difference lies in exactly what you’re allergic to. Gluten is a protein that’s found in grains such as wheat, barley and rye. To put it simply, if you have an allergy to wheat, you’re only allergic to wheat, while an allergy to gluten means that you may have an allergic reaction to many more foods.

The most probable cause why we get allergies is because of three things: the air we breathe, the weak immune system and too much chemical intake. There are a lot of natural allergy remedies you can use to all of those things. For example, getting an air purifier, humidifier or dehumidifier will improve the air you breathe. You should change your diet and eat more natural food (help boost your immunity system), and there are some other herbal and chemical free remedies you can use to improve your allergies.

Other allergy symptoms may cause more reactions that can occur even weeks after an exposure. This type of allergy is probably the most difficult to diagnose. Sufferers continue to experience problems for years. Some are continually misdiagnosed particularly for those with allergy symptoms that include gastro-intestinal issues such as irritable bowel syndrome, constipation or diarrhea. Finding the food that causes these reactions and eliminating them is the only way to find relief. Depression and attention deficit have also surprisingly been linked as an allergy symptom to certain chemicals or food additives. Out of the box treatments such as acupuncture may help to find the root causes of these allergy symptoms.

Many types of fine cuisine will feature allergens as ingredients. One way to handle this without restricting your menu is by labeling each dish. If you are having a buffet or serving station, you can have elegant little cards naming each dish. A card might read, “Chicken in lobster sauce”, which is nice because it both informs your guests what is in each tray and sends a message to those with an allergy. Menu cards can also be a simple way to get information to your guests. Instead of just writing “French cut green beans”, print “French cut green beans garnished with slivered almonds”. That way, a guest with an allergy to tree nuts could ask the server to omit the green beans from their plate.
